New Book Offers Entertaining Look at the Inception of MTV
A new music history book takes us back to the MTV’s music video roots.
I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the MusicVideo Revolutionby co -authors Craig Marks and Rob Tannenbaum is a nostalgic rock history which chronicles how an obscure cable channel in New Jersey became the iconic MTV. Through interviews with over 400 rock stars the rise, metamorphosis and business practices of MTV are played out in an easy-to-follow yet hard-to-put-down read.
Before Snookie from the Jersey Shore MTV was all about the music video. “We want our MTV” the chanted ad slogan, brought music to the masses through a visual medium which had an undeniable influence on pop culture throughout the world.
The original format of the station was a series of music video shows hosted by video jockeys, a new form of disk jockey called VJ’s. Shows like YO-MTV Raps, 120 Minutes, Alternative Nation and Headbangers Ball helped pave the way for mainstream success of new genres of music such as New Wave, Grunge, Heavy Metal, and Rap.
Over the past few decades, MTV has given up the music and the video on its main channel and succumbed to the inevitable evolution of pop culture and the hunger for reality TV. The channel’s format now offers a plethora of reality TV and has aired series such as Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, The Real World, 16 and Pregnant, Road Rules, Jackass, The Osbournes, Punk’d, Pimp My Ride, MADE, Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, and The Hills.

MTV VMA Performances by Adele, Beyonce, Bruno Mars, Chris Brown, Lady Gaga and More
Lady Gaga,the opening act of MTV VMA’s.
The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, Sunday August 28 at 9/8 central. The awards show has become a platform for music industry A-listers to let their freak flags fly. Some of the more shocking moments in VMA history include Kanye’s on-air diss of Taylor Swift, the Britney, Christina and Madonna kiss (check out the video evidence below), Madonna’s original “Like a Virgin” number or Britney’s “I’m A Slave 4 U” dance with a live snake.
The reigning queen of shock Lady Gaga herself, will be opening the show this year. The Lady, who won a VMA for Best New Artist in 2009, arrived at last year’s event in her infamous raw meat dress and is sure to try to out-shock last year’s stunt.
Adele, Beyonce, Bruno Mars, Chris Brown, Jessie J, Lil Wayne, Nayer, Ne-Yo, Pitbull and Young the Giant will also be performing during this year’s show.
The evening’s presenters will include: Drake, Jack Black, Jared Leto, JB Smoove, Jennifer Lawrence, Joe Jonas, Jonah Hill, Kevin Hart, Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Selena Gomez, Seth Rogan, Taylor Lautner, Victoria Justice, Will Ferrell and Zoe Saldana.
Teen queen Selena Gomez will be hosting the pre-show festivites on the black carpet. One of the highlights of the show will be the wild fashions, providing a sugarshock of eye-candy.
